What is a Marketing Strategy

There are 4.62 billion social media users in the world, this is more than half the worlds population (58.4%) and a staggering total of 445 million new users have joined social media in the past 12 months!

Although these are impressive stats, social media has become an increasingly competitive space as 9 out of 10 businesses in America use social media for marketing purposes. So, a marketing strategy has never been so important to a businesses success within the social media space.

Within this post, we aim to identify the key areas that'll help you develop a bulletproof Social Media Marketing strategy.

Identifying Your Goals

Before we get started, you must note that there's no "one size fits all" within the social media marketing space. Every business has different goals and objectives. Identifying these goals and objectives is your first step and we've written a list of the most common questions that you should ask yourself when identifying your businesses goals and objectives.

  • Find out who your target audience is
  • Identify the type of content you need to post
  • Identify your goals
  • Select the best platforms
  • Build a community

Creating a Social Media Marketing Strategy

Let's imagine that we're a streetwear clothing brand, we sell our products online and have no physical location.

We will use this business example throughout this post.

Finding out who your target audience is

Firstly, you need to understand who you're communicating with. For our clothing brand example above, we'd typically be targeting young teens and adults in their early twenties. Our target market is mostly male, however, females are also prone to loving the streetwear style as well.

You could even go one step further with this point and create an ideal customer avatar. (We'll have a new blog post about this next week)

Identify the type of content you need to post

Understanding the best type of content that your target audience will engage with most is a vital step. One of the quickest easiest ways to identify this is by looking at competitors accounts or other big accounts within the industry, like influencers.

For example, if we where looking for the best streetwear content, we could look at a company like Supreme or a star within the industry like Virgil Abloh, we'd then identify between 5 - 10 posts that received the best engagement and ask ourselves why.

  • Why did people engage so well with these posts?
  • What hashtags where used?
  • What're people commenting?

All the above points will assist you in diagnosing why these specific posts had such great engagement. You can later refer to this and implement it into your own work.

Identify your goals

I know, this was the title of the entire segment, however, this in itself is important. Write a list that identifies your goals and purpose

Continuing with our clothing brand example:

  • Create a positive brand image
  • Organically sell products
  • Grow an engaging community
  • Deliver quality and value not quantity

These points are just a few of the many goals and objectives you should be thinking about when creating your social media marketing strategy.

Selecting the best platforms

There are over 130 social media platforms to date, meaning that selecting a handful of these to find your target audience is key to the success of your social media marketing strategy. I'm sure you've heard of the main platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, however, with the likes of TikTok becoming increasingly popular for businesses to market on, we've listed a few known and unknown platforms below to assist your decision.

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Snapchat
  • Triller

Here's a great article by Influencer Marketing Hub about the 130+ social media platforms that you should consider joining.

Remember, you don't need to be on all 130+ platforms, my rule of thumb is to select 3-5 platforms, however, this really depends on your audience and target market.

Consider looking at what platforms your competitors are on and how frequent they post on different platforms.

Build a community

Last but not least is building a community. People on social media follow others because they're interest in them or the business, we like the products, we like their content or it's simply just family and friends.

With this in mind, you should consider focusing on building a community as this guarantees strong sustainable growth for your business on social media and ensures you'll always have customers returning to like, comment, share and even purchase.

You can build a strong sustainable social media community by:

  • Using hashtags
  • Cross promoting
  • Responding to your community (Comments)
  • Create goodwill

People love to feel apart of a like minded community and they feel even more drawn to brands and businesses that deliver content for them.

The outcome

All the above points can help you achieve greater success with your social media marketing and help structure a fantastic strategy. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day and consistency is key for your success on social media.
